Thursday Tips & Tricks | Photography in the Everyday…

I have to be completely honest with you. I have barely picked up my camera for the entire month of January. After the fall photography season it was time for a little break. But to be even more completely honest, I miss it terribly. I have missed not having my camera in my hand at all times. I mean, I love photography. All things photography. I love looking at it, doing it, learning about new techniques, and (of course) fun little tips & tricks. Yeah, I might be a photo nerd. I am ok with that.

.

But how do you balance regular life with this love? Or even worse, when you are learning and you need to photograph everyday. I said earlier in the week that I tried a 365 last year. I couldn’t do it because some days I spend with my family. I mean I am really WITH them. Not the oh-that-is-so-cute-what-you-are-doing-I-am-going-to-take-a-picture-of-it-and-then-post-it-to-the-interwebs “with” them. (I have instagram and an iphone for that 🙂 ) So I know that I can probably not do a 365 project with my family. How do you take photos everyday but not be crazy about it?

.

Today I have seen two other photographers/photo groups post about this topic. I guess it isn’t just me. Click it Up a Notch even posted this youtube video with their wonderful post.

.

.

It is hilarious. And hide-under-the-table, oh-my-gosh-they-are-talking-about-me TRUE! I am ‘that’ mom who gets to the event early. Not to get a good seat to see my kid. To get a good seat to photograph my kid. I think I need an intervention.

.

My wonderful photographer friend Jennifer asked me if I was shooting yesterday. You see she takes amazing life shots. She is wickedly talented. And I thought, well… the kids get home from school, then we have DI practice, then we have to figure out dinner that I haven’t planned yet, then we have Wednesday night church, then we have baths, and then I have a webinar that I have already signed up for… sigh, when will I even have time.

.

So after my busy afternoon of real life it was bath time. And I thought, I will bring the camera upstairs with me and if there are moments I can shoot I will.

.

Well, duh, there were moments. And I loved it! I did dream of a wonderful photograph with bubbles everywhere. But she had to take a bubble-less bath due to a new allergy or intolerance to nickel. (Yea check out the her poor ears in the second photo, there aren’t earrings in there, those are horrible little scabs from the reaction.) This little girl still knows how to have fun in the bath!

So how do you take photographs everyday but not be a crazy person about it? I don’t know.

But I will start with photographing a little… then putting the camera back in the bag and living a lot!
