10 Shocking Mistakes Parents Make During Newborn Photoshoots (And How to Avoid Them!)

Let’s be honest—newborn photos are adorable but can feel pretty overwhelming for new parents. As a photographer, I’ve seen it all, and believe me, you’re not alone if you’ve made one of these common slip-ups. So, let’s get real about the top 10 mistakes parents often make during their newborn photoshoots (and exactly how you can dodge them)!

1. Waiting Too Long (Oops!)

Did you know the sweet spot for newborn photos is actually within the first two weeks? Babies are sleepier and easier to pose during this time. After two weeks, you might have a little wiggle-worm on your hands! But do NOT let that deter you if you did! It is ok, but you will need to be a little more flexible in the results. Babies might not be as flexible, but you will still get amazing memories.

2. Not Feeding Baby Right Before the Session

A hungry baby can quickly turn your peaceful session into a stressful mess. A full belly means a calm baby—and better pictures!

3. Trying Complicated Pinterest Poses Without a Pro

Those cute Pinterest poses might look easy, but many involve special techniques. Safety first, always! Leave the advanced stuff to professionals who know exactly what they’re doing.

4. Ignoring Baby’s Natural Sleep Schedule

Planning a session during your baby’s usual awake time might lead to more fussing than smiling. Work with your baby’s natural rhythms, not against them. Sometimes though, we have to go with the flow. So relax we will get it done!

5. Uncomfortable Outfits (Cute, but No Thanks)

I get it—those tiny outfits are adorable! But tight, scratchy clothes will only irritate your little one. Soft, cozy, and simple is the key! I have a huge variety of soft wraps and props for babies!

6. Overlooking Room Temperature

Babies are super-sensitive to temperature. Keeping the room warm (around 75-80°F) makes all the difference in helping your little one relax and sleep peacefully.

7. Bringing Every Prop You Own

Props can be cute, but sometimes less is more. Too many props can take the focus away from your sweet baby’s tiny details (like those adorable toes!). But please bring in what is special to you! It is better to have it and NOT use it than wish you had it. (bonus tip: if you didn’t get a photograph with something you wish you did, bring it to the milestone session!)

8. Expecting Perfection (It’s Okay to Get Messy!)

Newborn sessions are never perfect. Babies cry, spit up, and squirm—and that’s totally normal. Embrace these little imperfections because they’re part of the story.

9. Forgetting Sibling Entertainment

If big brother or sister is joining the shoot, don’t forget entertainment (and snacks!). Happy siblings make for happier, smoother sessions.

10. Not Communicating Your Vision

Be open about what you love and what you’re looking for. Clear communication helps photographers capture exactly what matters most to you.

Remember, your newborn session should be fun, laid-back, and memorable—not stressful. Avoiding these mistakes will help ensure your photos are authentic, joyful, and genuinely YOU.

Happy shooting!
