Let’s be real—those early newborn days are a blur of snuggles, sleepless nights, and wondering what day it is. And somewhere in the middle of all that, you realize: you don’t want to forget this stage.
If you’re thinking about booking a newborn photographer (yay!), here are five questions I always recommend asking to make sure you’re choosing someone who’s the right fit for you—and your baby. Hopefully it is me, but even if it is not, ask!!!
1. How much experience do you have with newborns?
Newborn photography is its own little world. It takes patience, gentleness, and a whole lot of baby whispering. Make sure your photographer not only knows how to use a camera—but also knows how to handle and safely pose your brand-new baby.
2. Do you offer studio or in-home sessions?
Some parents love the calm, styled vibe of a studio session (no mess to clean up at home!). Others want the cozy, real-life feel of a lifestyle session at home. Ask what options are available so you can choose what feels right for your family—or even mix a little of both. I offer what is called posed or studio newborn portraits.
3. What’s included in your session?
Every photographer does things a little differently. Some offer digital files, others include prints or albums. Ask about how long the session is, how many images you’ll get, and whether things like wraps or props are provided (I’ve got you covered on that, by the way!).
4. When should we book?
The sweet spot for newborn sessions is usually between 7–14 days after birth. But don’t wait that long to reach out! I recommend booking during your pregnancy so we can plan ahead—and still be flexible if your baby decides to come early or fashionably late.
5. What’s your style—and does it match what we love?
Take a look through their portfolio. Does it feel like you? Do you love the editing, posing, and overall vibe? Your newborn photographer should not only create beautiful images—you should also feel comfortable and cared for every step of the way.
Choosing a newborn photographer is a big decision. You want someone who makes the whole experience feel easy and natural—and who captures your baby in a way that feels true to your family.
