Last week was Spring Break for our school district. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook (or even google plus) you will probably have noticed a large amount of pictures of my own kiddos and our travels. Sorry about that! But it was really fun. And I took a lot of pictures… and by a lot I mean seriously obsessed. I took so many different lenses and fun enough only didn’t use 1 of them. We drove up to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and I didn’t want to carry all of my lenses. I knew I wanted my wide 16-28. She is my newest and I am still getting use to it. I thought to myself… it’s a cave… it will be dark… take your 50 1.4… and I also took my trusty 24-70 (my workhorse lens).
.
So when we started out I had my 24-70 on the camera. I probably should have had the wide on but I didn’t. Once we reached the opening to the cave I didn’t even have a chance to think about it and chance lenses. Wanna know why?? 1) because I am a little (L.O.T.) of a chicken and was afraid to move, let alone change a lens. 2) the kiddos and husbands (who was wearing the backpack) went ahead of us slow pokes. (btw, shout out to my friend Kim who walked with me… slow pokes are the best!!) So there I was terrified of the walk but I kept taking pictures. Some of them are just bad… wait, no a lot of them are. I mean come on, it is not easy taking a photo in basically the dark while trying release the one handed death grip of the little tiny railing down the cavern.

The entrance and then looking back up at the entrance. Death grip on the rail, once there was a rail!!
.
.
Our wonderful families would wait for us to catch up a few times before just heading to the bottom without us!

.
Below are the very few images I got of my kiddos. And the last one is of my sweet husband who hung back to make sure we were ok. And another shout out to my awesome assistant and her sister and dad who walked with my kiddos during this time! If any one of my clients remembers Miss Kat, she is such a great young lady!!!

Ok, so the point of this. I probably took 1 too many lenses into the cave with me. I think I only needed my wide and my 50.
.
.
I had my 50 on and then we came upon these beauties! I stopped in the middle of the walkway to change to my wide. I knew their beauty would not be captured with a 50.
.
.
So the next time you are planning a trip or going on a vacation remember what you plan on doing. I would have really been mad at myself if I only took the 50. I am very happy with my choice of lenses for this trip. Now if I ever go back I might talk to the rangers about the “no tripod, please let me bring a monopod in” pleads. (Btw, I saw two tripods while there – sad face).
