Imagine taking a picture is like cooking where you adjust three important ingredients: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Aperture is like the size of the window in a dark room. A bigger window (lower f-number) lets in more light, while a smaller one (higher f-number) lets in less. Shutter speed is how long you keep the window open. A fast shutter speed (like blinking quickly) freezes action but lets in less light, while a slow one (like blinking slowly) lets in more light but can blur movement. Lastly, ISO is like how sensitive your eyes are in the dark. A higher ISO makes your camera more sensitive to light but might add graininess, while a lower ISO gives cleaner pictures but needs more light. By balancing these three things, photographers can make sure their pictures look just right, whether they’re capturing a fast-moving soccer game or a beautiful sunset.

Now let’s walk through some images. Here I will explain which part of the exposure triangle was the main focus vs which elements are simply the settings.
The two images below are from a morning in a Colorado Springs hotel during a trip into the mountains. I love documenting all parts of life, especially when the light is so pretty. For the first image I focused on the shutter speed. I needed the light to be just right, and it still was blown out a bit, but that didn’t matter for my intention. My aperture was higher and my iso was set to balance the two.
In the image below that one, I knew I wanted a silhouette. I wanted her to be the focus without us seeing her clearly. This image still has a fast shutter speed and high aperture (she is a kid and could have moved at any time), so what I adjusted was the iso. I brought it way down to reduce the amount of light coming in.
