How to Choose a Location for your Photo Session

How to Choose a Location for your Photo Session

With so many locations, how do you choose one for your session?

.

I have been a photographer for a few years now and one of the most asked questions is choosing a location for your photo session. And really how do you choose a location for your session? I have thought about this for a long time. As a photographer I understand some of the technicals that go into a good location. The time of day, the location of the sun, the safety of your children vs a busy intersection or dangerous road. So many factors really go into choosing your location. But even with that, there are locations everywhere! And you want the most perfect location, so how do you pick one?

.

Think about what you want to do with your images.

Do you want them in your house? A wall portrait? Over the couch or fireplace? If so, then the next question is what is your decor? Do you have a style? If you are into the modern farmhouse (which is totally where I am, thank alot Fixer Upper!) then a session in the middle of Downtown Dallas probably isn’t what you are looking for. Now a session in the middle of an open field with beautiful tall grass might be better, near a beautiful old barn or even in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road. Or in your house now showing your own lifestyle!
.

I don’t want a wall portrait this year, but I do want a small keepsake album of us.

Then your location can really speak to you. I can remember a beautiful session that I shot downtown. The family was beautiful, the kids were great! And at the end of the session the kids started playing around being kids and I kept shooting. And that quickly became a favorite! What a fun album of this family just being a family! And in a location they frequently visit.

.

But I don’t know of any place. I can’t pick a location.

That is what I am here for! I will ask you first general questions. What kind of setting do you like? Do you like Downtown Dallas? a park with pretty stone bridges? A creek where you can splash around? Near a lake where you take walks? In an open field that you could imagine yourself daydreaming in? An long dirt road that you have seen in movies and just dream of your children in that location. The possibilities are really endless!

.

Can you make a location fit my kids?

YES! I have been working hard on a new type of session for a while now. These sessions are very specific to you. To your child. I want to create the magical environment that your sweet babies are living in right now! Because you know their imaginations are the most magical places. So let’s dream up a fun session. Let’s dream up a fairytale and put it in motion.

I have been wanting to visit a long dirt road for a while now. And I have been very specific in the type of road. I didn’t want trees on the side of the road. I wanted it to go straight on into the horizon. For me, right now it really signifies my journey. My journey that has been full of twists and turns, ups and downs… my journey that has no end and I am just along for the ride. And I found it. It wasn’t easy. I couldn’t go right out and shoot it. But when the perfect timing happened. And I decided to load up the car full of kids (they were having a sleepover – p.s. I had parents permission lol I didn’t just take them) we drove out an hour and a half to this road. I didn’t know what I would find but I knew there might be something there that was magical. And you know what… It was! I planned a few outfits for each girl to wear. I planned one specifically for Sophie. And I tossed some spare parts of clothes in the car. And when we got there. I grabbed the spare parts for Sophie and put it together! And it was perfect! I will go more into what to wear guides later on in the week! So check back with the blog for that!
