How to Prepare Kids for an Easter Mini Session

Tips from a Dallas Family Photographer

Easter mini sessions are one of my favorite times of year. The dresses, the spring colors, the excitement of the season… it’s all so sweet. Whether your session is at the studio or at a park like the Dallas Arboretum. If you’re a parent, you’re probably wondering one thing before your session. :

“What if my kids don’t behave?”

Let me reassure you right now: you are not the only one who worries about this.

As a Dallas family photographer who has photographed children for years, I can promise you this — kids don’t have to be perfect for us to get beautiful photographs.

Here are a few simple ways to prepare your kids for an Easter mini session so everyone has a great experience.

First: Don’t Stress About Perfect Behavior

The biggest worry parents share with me before a session is that their kids won’t cooperate.

Here’s the truth: kids rarely behave perfectly during photos. And that’s okay.

Some of the best images come from letting kids be themselves. We’ll take time, explore, and even play a little “follow the leader.” When kids feel like they can move and interact naturally, they relax — and that’s when real smiles happen.

So take a deep breath. You don’t need perfect children to get beautiful photos.

Avoid the Pre-Session Threats (Seriously)

This might be the most important tip I can give.

Please don’t threaten your kids before the session.

When kids arrive feeling pressured or nervous, they tend to shut down. Instead, let the session feel like something fun. We’ll talk, hang out, and give them a chance to get comfortable with me and the environment.

Trust me — patience and a little play go a long way.

And if your kiddo starts picking flowers at the Dallas Arboretum… that’s when we might step in a little faster. ?

Bring a Few Simple Supplies

A little preparation can make a big difference.

Here are a few things I recommend bringing to your Easter mini session:

Non-messy snacks (avoid anything sticky or colorful)
Water instead of juice to prevent stains
Baby wipes to clean hands or faces quickly
Comfortable shoes if their dress shoes aren’t great for walking

If we’re photographing at the Dallas Arboretum, there can be a bit of exploring involved, so having comfortable shoes available can be really helpful.

Don’t Worry About Getting Dirty

Another big concern parents have is keeping those adorable Easter outfits clean.

If that makes you nervous, studio sessions can be a great option because they limit distractions and keep little ones from wandering too far.

Outdoor sessions, especially at places like the Arboretum, are beautiful but a little more adventurous. That said, we still keep things relaxed and manageable so kids can enjoy themselves without turning into a muddy mess.

My Philosophy When Photographing Kids

My goal during any Easter session is to create a mix of both worlds.

Yes, I work hard to capture those beautiful posed portraits where everyone is looking at the camera.

But I also want to photograph your kids being kids.

The giggles.
The curiosity.
The little personalities that make them who they are right now.

Years from now, those real moments often become the photographs families love the most.

Because childhood isn’t perfectly posed.

It’s playful, unpredictable, and full of life — and those are the moments worth remembering.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

Your job as a parent during the session is simple:

Relax and let your kids be themselves.

I’ve photographed so many families over the years, and I promise we will make something beautiful together.

Even if your child is shy.
Even if they’re wiggly.
Even if they need a little time to warm up.

That’s all part of the process.

And sometimes those are the sessions that end up being the most magical.

If you’re planning an Easter mini session and would love updated photos of your kids this spring, I would love to photograph your family.

Spring sessions often take place at beautiful locations like the Dallas Arboretum or in my studio depending on the style you’re looking for.Because these sessions are short and seasonal, they tend to book quickly each year. Email me to book!
