Making the decision of what lens to use

Making the Decision of What Lens to Use

Thursday Tips & Tricks

What lens should I buy next? Y’all even I asked this question when I was just starting out. Making the decision of what lens to use can be a hard decision. That is until you know about lenses. I always kind of got irritated when people would answer that questions with ‘the lens that you need’. In my opinion I needed them all and wanted them all. But I didn’t know why. Time has passed and I have learned a LOT about lens choice. And now I know. And I have even become one of those people who answers the question with a question.

“What lens should I get next?”

“What do you need to use it for?”

.

See they all have very different uses and purposes. From ultra wide to zooms to primes… So today I just wanted to show you an example of making a lens choice.  I loved photographing these little ones at the State Fair of Texas. We wanted to capture a Midway shot but y’all, it can get crowded. So first I shot with my 35. And really only for the reason that it was already on my camera.

While I like it…

State Fair of TexasI wanted something different. I like this one with my 35 because it shows the kiddos in the moment… btw shooting next to the smokers for the turkey legs is not the best place 😉 but it was fun….

.

SO. I switched lenses. I knew if I could get a longer length on my lens then i would compress the image a bit more and single out my cute little subjects. In the image above they just blend in with their environment.

.

I had my 100 in my bag because I knew my 200 would be too far away. I could never get an image without people in the way.
