Winter and snow are two things that I love. A good snow can turn the everyday into a magical place. When it comes to making photographs in the snow, it can be a little tricky. Snow reflects light in a way that makes the world beautiful. Portraits of families in the snow or even simply documenting your kids having fun in the snow. Here are some easy tips that can help you make your snow photographs.
- Use the Light: The soft, natural light is great for photographs. Still if the sun is out you want to avoid harsh light from straight above. The snow will help reflect but the afternoon and mornings when the sun is a little lower the light that bounces will be dreamy.
- Dress for Warmth and Style: You need warm clothes. Think about your feet especially. When kids feet are warm they can stay out longer. And no one likes cold toes. Warm clothes with little pops of color, like with a hat or scarf can make them more interesting. Layer, layer, layer. Textures and layers will keep warm and add dimension.
- Protect Your Camera: If it is snowing with snow mixed with rain, you will want to cover your camera. If you have a camera cover, great. But if you don’t, grab a grocery store bag and a rubber band. Put the lens through one handle and put a rubber band on it on the lens. Then you can cover your camera. Also this is what lens hoods were made for. Ya know other than keeping the sun out of the lens.
